Maths

At Worlds End  Infant and Nursery School we aim to provide a high-quality maths curriculum that is both challenging and enjoyable. Our maths curriculum has been developed to ensure that children from the outset are given the best foundations to become confident, articulate and fluent mathematicians. Structured and progressive taught maths lessons enable children to learn and deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts through a range of intertwined experiences that promote fluency, reasoning and problem-solving. It is our intent for children to leave our school ready for their on-going learning journey and recognise how maths surrounds them in their everyday lives.

The White Rose Maths scheme of learning is followed in Years One and Two which fully follows the National Curriculum for Maths whilst in Reception staff use the NCETM 'Mastering Number' programme.  Teachers plan work in sequential units that builds on previous learning which leads to deeper learning, but staff also ensure that the children are secure with the government's 'Ready to Progress' criteria.  The curriculum is broken down into small manageable steps which help children understand concepts better. Flexibility is built into the scheme to allow our staff to adapt to meet the needs of the children.  In Years One and Two alongside daily maths lessons children have additional fluency maths sessions which aims  to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number.

We provide all children with the practical skills to understand the concepts, facts and operations necessary to meet the mathematical needs of everyday life and will ensure that all children make very good progress from their starting points.
