Supporting reading at home                                 

• Listen to your child read for at least 10 minutes every day. Talk about the book together and ask them questions too. Remember to sign their reading record as this is a useful way to communicate with your child's teacher about their reading. Please make sure your child's reading book and reading record are in school every day, as we read with them at every opportunity! 
• Support your child to develop their phonic skills. More information about phonics can be found by clicking on the Phonics and Early Reading star.  
• Help you child to learn to read their keywords. This will have a huge impact on their reading fluency. You can be as creative as you like in helping them to learn them, for example, you might like to stick the keywords around the house or even play a game with them. Keywords for Reading 

As part of the curriculum, the children are required to read words from memory.  Some of the words are referred to as 'common exception words,' which are words where the usual spelling rules do not apply. These words are also usually encountered more often in a text. 

• Set 1 and 2 consists of the common exception words from the Year One curriculum. They also include the days of the week. 
• Set 3, 4 and 5 consist of the Year Two common exception words. 

Once your child has learnt all of the keywords from set 1 and 2, they will receive their first reading certificate called 'Start of the Rainbow.'  Once they can read all of the words from set 3, 4 and 5 they will receive the 'Rainbow Reader' certificate. When your child has learnt all of the words from set 1 to set 5, they will begin to receive extension keywords to learn at home. These will contain some words related to the topic that the children are learning about that particular half term, as well as some phonetically decodable words.

Helping your child to learn these at home will really make a difference and greatly improve their reading fluency.
